Like any other Operating System (OS). Linux is an alternative OS for DOS, UNIX, Mac OS and Microsoft Windows platform. Linux belong to the family of "free and open source software" (FOSS). On September 17, 1991 the first distribution of LINUX kernel was released by "Linus Torvalds" freely. Later the project was taken up by open-source software collaboration community, which eventually contributed to todays multiple flavours distribution.
Linux was originally developed for personal computers based on the Intel x86 architecture, post evolution its been ported to more platforms than any other operating system. Because of the dominance of the Linux kernel-based approach, Linux has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems. Linux is also the leading / Prefered operating system on servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and Supercomputers
